Introduction


Richard Feynman, the great physicist, once said, “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself — and you are the easiest person to fool.


We need to check in with ourselves and keep ourselves honest. We all stray from our Values, Goals and The Path. That is normal, that is okay. What we do when we realise we have strayed is what matters.

The Socratic method is a form of cooperative, argumentative dialogue to stimulate critical thinking and illuminate ideas. It is named after the classical Greek philosopher Socrates, who employed this method in his teaching. 


In the Socratic method, instead of providing direct answers to questions, a person engages in a dialogue to explore and clarify their own (or others) thoughts and beliefs. This process involves asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and uncover underlying assumptions or contradictions.


When applied to the self, the Socratic method becomes a means of self-inquiry and reflection.



Process


In the tradition of the Socratic method, the below is a series of questions to consider when checking in with yourself as you progress:

  • Review each question one at a time. Are you being honest with yourself? Do you truly know your position and progress?

  • The Self Review Worksheet in The Workbook can be used to help document your thoughts, answers and plans for moving forward.

  • Based on your review, thoughts, answers and plans for moving forward:

    • Do you need to adjust your Models & Theories to course correct or move forward?

    • Do you have further Lessons to learn to adapt your approach?

    • Are there Tactics that could assist you to better handle specific scenarios?

  • Whatever the answers are you discover about yourself, whether positive or negative, it doesn't really matter. What matters is what you do next.

  • Continually learn, continually improve and move forward.




Self Review



1. How Do I Handle Conflict?


Consider your approach to conflict resolution. How do you typically respond to disagreements or challenges? Reflect on whether your communication style fosters understanding and collaboration, or if there are areas for improvement.




2. Am I Actively Listening?


Assess your listening skills. Do you genuinely listen to others without interrupting or formulating responses prematurely? Active listening is crucial for harmonious communication and building strong relationships.




3. Do I Recognize and Manage My Emotions?


Reflect on your emotional intelligence. How well do you recognize and manage your own emotions? Emotional self-awareness and regulation are key components of effective communication.




4. Am I Considerate of Others' Perspectives?


Evaluate your ability to empathize. How often do you consider others' viewpoints and experiences? Empathy fosters understanding and helps build connections with those around you.




5. Do I Communicate Clearly and Concisely?


Consider your communication style. Are your messages clear and easy to understand? Clarity in communication minimizes misunderstandings and contributes to effective collaboration.




6. Am I Cultivating Positive Relationships?


Consider the quality of your relationships. Are you fostering positive connections with those around you? Building and maintaining healthy relationships is essential for personal well-being and professional success.




7. How Do I Handle Stress and Pressure?


Reflect on your stress management strategies. How do you cope with pressure, and how does it impact your communication? Developing effective stress management techniques can contribute to more harmonious interactions.




8. How Can I Depersonalize the Issue?


Explore ways to detach personal emotions from the problem. What strategies can you use to focus on the issue at hand rather than becoming entangled in personal feelings?




9. Are There Common Interests We Share?


Identify shared interests with the other party. What aspects of the situation can be reframed to emphasize common ground? Finding common interests can be a powerful tactic for building collaboration.




10. How Can I Foster a Collaborative Atmosphere?


Reflect on the atmosphere you're creating. What tactics can you use to foster a collaborative and positive environment for discussion? Building a sense of teamwork can lead to mutually beneficial outcomes.




11. Is there a Third-Party Mediation Option?


Explore the possibility of bringing in a neutral mediator. How might a third party help facilitate communication and guide the discussion toward a harmonious resolution?




12. Can I Utilize "Framing" Techniques?


Consider the power of framing. How can you present the situation in a way that highlights positive aspects or reframes challenges as opportunities? Strategic framing can influence perceptions.




13. What Small Concessions Can I Offer?


Explore the concept of making small concessions. What minor gestures or compromises can you offer to build goodwill and demonstrate a commitment to finding common ground?




14. Are There Nonverbal Communication Strategies I Can Use?


Reflect on nonverbal cues. How can your body language, tone, and gestures contribute to a more positive and collaborative atmosphere? Nonverbal communication plays a significant role in difficult conversations.




15. How Can I Establish a Positive Precedent for Future Interactions?


Consider the long-term implications of your actions. What steps can you take to establish a positive precedent for future interactions, fostering an ongoing atmosphere of collaboration and harmony?





By posing these self-reflective questions you can deepen your awareness of your current position. In turn, enhancing the clarity and most important steps of your strategic approach moving forward.
